Faroese gear for fishing and aquaculture

Faroese fishing gear supplier Vónin goes back a long way as an IceFish exhibitor and the company has a strong presence in Iceland on both fishing and aquaculture markets.

“An exhibition has to be worthwhile, and we see IceFish as the place to meet our Icelandic customers,” said Vónin’s Bogi Nón.
“We also always see some of our customers from other countries there, especially visitors from Canada and Greenland who come to IceFish.”

He commented that the Icelandic market is an important one for Vónin, which has longstanding customers there, particularly for Vónin’s blue whiting trawl gear.
“We are making trawls now for four Icelandic pelagic vessels, Venus, Víkingur, Beitir and Hoffell. These are all 2016 metre trawls and we’re delivering these in advance of next year’s blue whiting fishery,” he said.

“We have been doing well on blue whiting, and the largest proportion of blue whiting catches in the North Atlantic is caught in Vónin trawls.”
As well as supplying fishing gear to the catching sector, Vónin has been there to support Faroese fish farmers as the aquaculture sector has grown, and has already supplied systems for the expanding Icelandic salmon and trout farming sector.

“We have a lot of experience in designing net cages and mooring systems for aquaculture. Here in the Faroe Islands we experience some extreme winter weather conditions and wave heights. So if our systems can withstand what the Faroese weather can throw at them, then they are ideal for Icelandic conditions.”
