Changing with the times
The IceFish awards were introduced at the 1999 exhibition – and these have also evolved to reflect the way the fisheries have changed, and the latest evolution mirrors the North Atlantic seafood industry’s growing focus on adding value, aquaculture and the burgeoning demand for full utilisation of by-products; extracting value and nutrition from everything from fish skins to shrimp production waste.
The 2020 awards combine longstanding features – awards for outstanding Icelandic skipper, outstanding Icelandic achievement, best stands and best new products launched at the show – alongside a re-imagined suite of awards aimed at highlighting the achievements of producers across the international seafood sector, as well as those companies supplying them with the technology that makes it all come together.
“This doesn’t mean we are excluding the catching sector, but we are setting out a platform to highlight imaginative companies across the broader industry. At the same time, opening out the awards to a wider range of companies reflects the highly international nature of the fishing, seafood and aquaculture businesses worldwide,” said Mercator Media events director Marianne Rasmussen-Coulling.
“You could hardly have an exhibition in such a leading fisheries country as Iceland without ensuring recognition for outstanding talent and achievement – both local and visiting. Having seen so much of the industry’s innovation and imagination showcased in our partner publications, I never fail to look forward to seeing the selections made by the editorial teams of World Fishing & Aquaculture and Fiskifréttir who together form the judging panel,” she said.
