BUILDING FOR HOME AND EXPORT MARKETS

GRP boatbuilder Trefjar has delivered new fishing vessels to both local and export markets this year, and is also making an appearance at the 2022 Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition.

This summer Trefjar delivered a Cleopatra 40BB to Sandgerði fishing company Blakksnes, departing from the usual Cleopatra pattern to work with ship designer Raðgarður to develop a 12.50 metre overall longliner with a 6.70 metre beam to fit within the <30gt category.

Rigged with a full Mustad autoline system, Hulda has been fishing successfully this summer off the west of Iceland.

The extra-broad beam provides extensive fishroom capacity, as well as accommodation space for eight bunks in four cabins, providing Hulda with the potential to work extended trips if required.

Norway is one of Trefjar’s key export markets and this year the yard has made several deliveries to Norwegian customers, most recently netter Nygrunn, delivered to Ørjan and Ketil Sandnes who fish from Leknes in the Lofoten Islands.

Nygrunn has replaced the oak-built boat that three generations of the Sandnes family had worked since 1971 and represents a significant step into the future, fitted with a gyroscopic Tohmei ARG250 anti-rolling stabiliser that minimises vessel movement in any kind of a seaway, providing a steady working platform that results in better handling of both catches and fishing gear.

“We are taking part in next year’s Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition,” said Trefjar’s Högni Bergthórsson.

“Our export markets in Norway, France and elsewhere have accounted for the majority of our orders in the last few years, but Iceland is our home market and it is naturally important to us. So IceFish is an ideal opportunity for us to meet our customers, and hopefully to get to know some new ones.”
